Gruß vom Krampus!
I thought it’d be fun to linocut Krampus for xmas prints this year. I’d been reading up on him and got really inspired to design a print. I didn’t look at too many images and mainly relied on reading for inspiration and influence. But I came up with a design that I’m really happy with. To be honest, I didn’t really have to sketch up much first. It was one of those rare moments when the first thing I drew was kinda spot on for what I was picturing.
I tried out some different cutting techniques and mark making on this one to get as much detail and texture in as possible. I wanted to experiment with describing fur, leather, metal chains… Trying to create variety in the linework to break away from solid, flat areas of ink. Plus I used a colour blend instead of only using black like I normally do.
I do use colour occasionally, but I often print in black ink as I’m focusing on the linework instead. But it’s something that I want to introduce more into my work at some point. I do think there are times when it is more appropriate to include some colours.
Loved making this little guy. Hope you like him. You can check him out properly with a few other folklore creature designs in my portfolio.
Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays!
